In the Beginning

When you first bring your baby home from the hospital, he will sleep an average of fifteen hours a day, generally in random chunks throughout the day and night. (Note: Your baby may sleep almost all the time, or as little as eleven hours or less.) Your baby may be at her most alert at 2 A.M. and have no interest in going back to sleep until 4 A.M. This day/night reversal is not unusual. While you were pregnant, your baby probably slept a lot during the day while you were walking around and rocking her with your movements, and then got more active as soon as you lay down for the night.

Some babies sleep more; others sleep less. These are the average number of hours per day, including naps, that babies sleep: newborns: sixteen hours; one to three months: thirteen to fifteen hours; four to seven months: twelve to fourteen hours; eight to twelve months: twelve to fourteen hours.
