Childproofing on the Go

Once your baby is crawling, you'll need to make sure that anyplace you visit with him is safe and, when necessary, make temporary childproofing changes. You'll need to be on high alert when you visit other homes and hotels since they haven't been custom-childproofed to protect against your infant's specific habits.

Before you put your baby down on the floor to start exploring:

  • Check for exposed electrical sockets.

  • Move out of reach any breakable objects from coffee tables and bookshelves.

  • Check for sharp corners on tables and wobbly furniture or lamps and move if necessary.

  • Close sliding doors and open windows, and never allow your baby on a balcony unless there is constant adult supervision.

  • Close the door to any bathrooms, ask if there are any dangers in lower kitchen cabinets, and, if necessary, temporarily lock with twist-ties or rubber bands.

Keep in mind that houseguests may not be as aware of childproofing as you are. Remind them to keep jewelry, makeup bags, shaving kits, and medications out of your baby's reach. Elderly relatives, in particular, may not keep their medication in childproof containers.
