Baby-Sign Classes

There are countless baby-sign classes all over the country. These classes use every method imaginable to teach sign. Some focus on American Sign Language. Others use baby gestures. If you are unsure of which method you want to use, find several programs in your area and ask if you can attend a free introductory class for each one. Check out a couple of different methods, and see which one feels right for you and your child.

E-FACT

Many baby-sign programs will allow you to browse through their class materials without actually having to sign up for the class. This will allow you to get a feel for the class, the method it uses, and possibly even background information on the program or instructor.

Is it necessary to take a baby sign-language class? No. All that is required to introduce sign language to your baby is a small amount of signing know-how and a lot of patience and determination. You can acquire the signing know-how from many sources: a book, DVD, a class, or from another signer. The patience and determination are things that come with time. That said, however, a class can certainly enhance the signing experience. It will also introduce you to other signing parents and your child to other signing babies.
