Theme Idea 2: Belly Bump Shower
This variation of the Zen shower features teas of India and an interesting blend of Indian spices under the influence of British tradition. The flavors and colors of the rich Indian culture add a taste of the exotic to this version of the baby shower. The activity — painting the mom’s belly with henna and giving henna tattoos to the guests, will carry out an ancient tradition and carry forward a meaningful experience for mom and guests alike.

Color Palette
The same natural textures and colors of nature can serve as inspiration for this shower, but add a pop of color and a layer of richness to capture the robust flavor of Indian culture. Jewel-tone colors found in the bazaars and marketplaces mix with the earthy colors of nutmeg, cinnamon, cumin, tamarind, and cloves to form the palette basics.
Throw in a touch of gold and silver by using bangle bracelets as napkins rings — simply drape the folded napkin through the bracelet like a towel holder to complete the look. Consider using a sari as a tablecloth and arrange wooden candlesticks in assorted heights and designs. Madagascar or night-blooming jasmine, pink or orange freesia, and sweet alyssum with the fragrance of warm honey are all excellent choices.
To create a centerpiece, start with a large, clear vase and fill it with kumquats or key limes. Add a spray of russet or plum-colored orchids, add water to cover the fruit, and voilà — a centerpiece is born. Or try this fragrance-infusing trick—place approximately 2 inches of whole cloves or cinnamon stick around the base of the candle. As the candle melts and burns, it will release the aroma of fresh spices.
The Perfect Game or Activity
Bring the tradition of intricate henna tattoos to your circle of friends by returning to the roots of Eastern culture. Henna tattoos require a little setup, but they are so beautiful that your guests will be thrilled to try out this new technique. Traditionally, the hands and feet are tattooed, but the belly, especially the pregnant belly, is a perfect surface for this timeless art form. Check out local resources for professional henna tattoo artists in your area if your budget allows.
Henna is a dye made from the root of the henna plant. It is used to color textiles, to dye hair, and to paint beautiful, intricate tattoos on women. Henna tattoos are temporary — they last about four weeks, but fade after each washing. The designs are based on nature — flowers, earth elements, and animals — but some of the designs relate to religious and spiritual symbols. Hennaing is considered a good-luck charm for women who have given birth. It is believed that the tattoos will protect the mother as she recovers from the rigors of childbirth.
Henna tattoo kits are available online. They are inexpensive to order, and they come complete with directions, transfers, ink, and a pen. All you will need to provide is a willing spirit.
Gifts That Work with This Theme
As with the Tranquili-Tea shower, the Indian version is about balance and a sense of calm. Start baby out early with gifts like:
Mommy-and-Me Yoga Membership. Yoga for babies is the newest old-fashioned way to teach movement, balance, and breathing, as well as baby massage. Classes are available around the country at yoga centers, health clubs, and even church halls. Whether you give a single class or a series of classes, this gift will help balance new responsibilities.
Baby-and-Me Yoga Clothes. These adorable onesies and T-shirts are designed to be worn by the babies of yoga moms.
Yoga Mat and Diaper Bag. Let the new mom stretch in style with a matching yoga mat and bag (which can double as a diaper bag).
Favors
Send guests home with a taste of the party with the Chai and Chocolates Gift Bag. Handmade chai tea mix (see recipe here) packaged with a dark chocolate bar is delicious anytime.
