Themes from Movies, Television, and Pop Culture

Movies, television, and pop culture offer a treasure-trove of ideas. There are theme “jewels” to be found, but you may need to stretch your imagination and give a potential idea a bit of a twist to make it work for baby. The results can be unconventional, but that may suit your style. One thing is certain: It will give your shower a personality all its own.

Some entertainment-inspired shower ideas include:

  • A “Survivor” Shower. If you have a fun-loving set of parents-to-be who are Survivor groupies, you could turn this interest into a great theme with a built-in activity—a Survivor-esque baby-care competition: Survivor: the Nursery Edition—Out Bathe, Out Diaper, Out Burp. An afternoon of barbequing complete with palm trees, s’mores, and a tribal council to decide who will survive the nursery challenge and who will be voted off the island.

  • An American Lullaby Idol Shower. This star-studded theme opportunity starts with a star-struck invitation for couples. Let guests know that they will be competing for the coveted title of American Lullaby Idol. Karaoke is the activity d’jour—menu options could include a make-your-own panini bar and brownies with peanut butter ice cream. Set up a shimmer curtain to create a “stage” and set the mood to shine. Award extra points for creating your own lullaby lyrics. Winner takes home a trophy and bragging rights.

  • A Superbawl Sunday Shower. This may be the easiest way to have a couples shower, especially during football season. Gather friends on any Sunday, kick off with beer and chili dogs, add baby gifts and a due-date pool, and you’ve got a touchdown!

  • A Diapering with the Stars Shower. Get moving! A local dance club or bar may be the perfect setting for dancing and diapering. Create a Diapering Line Dance or the Boot-Scooting Baby Boogie. Tell guests to wear something pink or blue, if you know the baby’s gender. Then get ready to boogie down.

Alert

A unique shower theme can present a décor and invitation challenge. A plethora of preprinted and prepackaged supplies for classically themed showers—like Winnie-the-Pooh—are readily available. Not so for some of the more unusual themes. If you love the creative process, you’ll rise to the challenge; however, if time (and creativity) is short, opt for a more traditional theme.

Or perhaps you like the concept of the TV/movie shower theme, but still want something different? Start by making a list of favorite movies, television shows, or pop-culture icons. Then play around with the words, sounds, and letters. Try adding a baby item to replace a word in a title—as in Drool or No Drool (borrowed from the television show Deal or No Deal).

Another way to come up with a theme is to start with a phrase; “Cute as a Button” or “Boys will be Boys,” both of which would work well as shower themes and can easily be carried through every detail.
