In 1609, Galileo peered through a telescope and identified heavenly bodies. Today, we realize that the telescope led to discoveries and scientific achievements far beyond what he could have imagined. Telescopes had certainly been in use before Galileo, but his application of optics to the heavens inspired new research, new discoveries, and the eventual availability of telescopes to individual consumers.
