Asteroids, comets, and meteors are different rocky and icy bodies that affect the solar system. Often grouped together under the heading small bodies, these objects are distinct classes with very different properties. Some objects, however, can transition from one class to another. Classifications are primarily defined by composition, speed, position in the solar system, orbit, and relation to Earth.
