Alternative or complementary treatments have become increasingly popular among arthritis patients. Some patients seek out alternative treatments because conventional treatment is not producing satisfactory results. Other reasons include a fear of side effects from prescription medications, a belief that natural treatments are safer, and a desire to find more effective ways to cope with chronic pain. Patients are not advised to forgo conventional treatment in favor of alternative treatment. New terminology has cropped up to represent the use of both conventional and alternative treatments — alternative medicine, complementary medicine, or integrative medicine.
