War on the frontier usually involved small numbers of combatants on either side. Despite this, engagements in the wilderness were often desperate and bloody. This fighting was a continuation of a long-running conflict between the Native American peoples, their European allies, and the relentless American push westward. Though it was a sideshow in the Revolutionary War, the contest along the frontier was fraught with consequence. It was a battle for the future of the west.
