In 1778, the intervention of France made the American Revolutionary War part of a larger conflict that embroiled much of Europe. Spain and the Netherlands joined France and the United States in the war against Britain. Russia organized a diplomatic coalition anxious to stay out of it. Military operations were conducted around the globe. The United States began its existence as an independent nation deeply involved in the power struggles of the Old World that many Americans had hoped they'd left behind.
