The violence of April 19, 1775, shattered British America. The political structures of the empire had failed. The issues dividing Britain and its American colonies would be decided by force. For many Americans, the call to arms helped clarify their loyalties. Many took up arms to vindicate their rights. Some were already thinking of independence. But others rallied to the support of the royal authorities. The American Revolution was in many ways a civil war.
