One of the most significant effects of World War II was felt over the long term:a shift in the world balance of power. Britain and France (Allied countries) as well as Germany and Japan (Axis enemies) ceased to be great military powers, leaving only the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR) as leaders with the weapons to prove their might.
