At the start of the Civil War, Andrew Johnson, a Tennessee Democrat, was the only Southern U.S. senator remaining loyal to the Union. You can imagine this didn't win him many friends, even if it did earn him the vice-presidential nomination in the 1864 election. Thrust into the presidency after a mere forty-one days on the job as second in command, Johnson tried to reunite the bitterly divided land that saw neighbor fight against neighbor, brother against brother.
