The Bill of Rights has come to symbolize the ideal that forms the basis of the American system of government: Freedom. Freedom to speak out against the government; freedom to assemble peaceably; freedom to worship; freedom from government intrusion. While some Americans would have difficulty in pointing to the Constitution as the source of our system of checks and balances, far fewer would have trouble identifying the Bill of Rights as the repository of our basic freedoms.
