As you have learned, American government works best when citizens are active participants in the process at every level and branch of government. Although today we have mostly professional legislators at the federal and state level, ample opportunities remain for ordinary citizens to become a part of the process. Voting, volunteering for campaigns, contacting elected officials, organizing at the grassroots level, submitting opinion pieces to newspapers, and running for office are just a few.
