The year 1861 opened under a dark cloud; the nation had been split into two parts. Lincoln had first to worry about Federal property besieged by Southerners. South Carolina fired on Fort Sumter before supplies arrived, and the war was on. The North responded with an “On to Richmond” campaign, the beginnings of a naval blockade, and strikes at Southern forces along their northern borders.
