The seceded states had to be restored into the Union, and former slaves had to be acclimated to their new status as freed citizens. This was the work of Reconstruction, which lasted more than a decade. Its course was rocky and only imperfectly accomplished. The Civil War and its aftermath still have a firm grip on the American imagination, as evidenced by the numerous books, motion pictures, and television shows depicting or analyzing its many aspects.
