The Civil War was decided by battles, but day by day, battles were the exceptions. For the soldiers, life was mainly in camp or marching to a place to set up new camps. During the worst winter months, camp life was about all there was. Life in camps held innumerable struggles: for proper diet, for adequate clothing, for dry bedding, and more. And, to be sure, there were also amusements, from gambling to music making.
