A number of applications in physics and engineering use complex numbers. Among these are digital signal processing, fluids, stress, and image processing. Fractals, a branch of geometry made popular by Benoît Mandelbrot in the 1960s, uses functions of complex numbers to describe chaotic phenomena such as weather systems.
