Neurofeedback Therapies

Neurofeedback, which is also called EEG-biofeedback or neuro-therapy, works on the assumption that you can improve the symptoms of adult ADHD by changing the level of activity in the brain. During neurofeedback, you're hooked up to an EEG machine and electrodes are attached to your scalp that (painlessly) deliver a baseline report of your brain activity. Your baseline report is then compared against a databank of “normal” baselines to measure differences. You repeatedly perform learning exercises aimed at improving areas where your brain function is weak.

Experimental Therapies

Many adults with ADHD use balancing therapies like visits to the chiropractor, osteopathy, yoga, transcendental meditation, acupuncture, acupressure, and homeopathy, to reduce stress, slow racing thoughts, and experience feelings of calm and tranquility.

Experimental therapies include sensory integration therapies, which may help you process stimuli more effectively; auditory integration training, which could assist with the processing of auditory stimuli; and vision therapy, which may help improve visual processing.

Although the results of rebalancing and experimental therapies have not been scientifically documented, many adults with ADHD find them extremely helpful in alleviating symptoms. Although these therapies are not usually prescribed in lieu of other biological treatments, they may be useful complements to your treatment program.
