Rehab and Recovery

Rehabilitation and recovery really are about getting cravings under control and preventing relapse. They are also about learning coping skills to better manage life stressors, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. In the early stages of recovery, it is also important to identify triggers that might precipitate a relapse. Old friends who were partners in substance use, places where substance use took place, and other reminders will need to be avoided.

Developing structure in one's daily life is helpful in keeping focused on rehabilitation and recovery. In severe cases of substance addiction, residential rehabilitation programs may be beneficial in providing a safe, contained, therapeutic, and supportive environment while getting started on the road to successful recovery. Support is essential, as very few people are able to successfully recover from substance addiction alone.

Twelve-step groups are one type of support system especially designed for recovering addicts. The support of family and friends is certainly important, but most addicted persons feel that the understanding and support they receive from others who have experienced similar problems is essential to maintaining recovery.
