Keep the Support Going!

Simply because one is headed on the path toward solid recovery does not mean that support systems are no longer needed. In fact, they are needed as much as or more than ever. Over time, the memories of what it was like to be engulfed in a life of addictions might become dim. Memories of the addictive lifestyle might even take on a nostalgic or romantic glow.

Support systems continue to hold one accountable, holding the recovering addict to a realistic perspective of where he's come from and reminding him of where he needs to go. Healthy support systems provide the recovering addict with friendships and activities that support his new, addiction-free life. Having one's social needs met without the trappings of addiction is one of the best ways to avoid relapse.

As a person gains strength in recovery, he will also be able to provide more self-support. Taking initiative in making life changes such as moving to a new neighborhood, making new friends, and developing new interests is part of supporting one's own recovery. Sharing this with supportive friends makes recovery even sweeter!

Self-pity is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for a recovering addict. One must resist the tendency to feel sorry for oneself. “Why me?” “Poor me!” “Why do I have to deal with these problems and others don't?” These thoughts are self-defeating. Overcoming a problem such as addiction can become an incredible strength and nothing to be sorry about.
