But the Doctor Prescribed It!

Prescription drugs are safe for most people provided they are used in the correct dosage and for the purpose prescribed by the physician. The key to safe use is professional supervision. There are three classes of prescription drugs that are commonly abused and may become addictive: opiates, central nervous system (CNS) depressants, and stimulants.

More details will come on the specific drugs involved, but for now the question is, why would any drug with the potential for addiction be prescribed? Opiates are also known as prescription narcotics and are primarily used for their pain-relieving properties. The pain associated with surgeries, dental work, serious injuries, and certain chronic illnesses is greatly alleviated through the use of prescription narcotics. Some drugs in this category are also helpful in treating coughs and diarrhea.

Fact

Even over-the-counter (OTC) medications can be abused when not used as directed. Cough suppressants, sleep aids, antihistamines, and anti-nausea medications may have psychoactive effects when used in excess. When combined with alcohol, OTC medications can be especially dangerous. Follow the directions carefully on the labels and call a doctor if harmful side effects become apparent.

CNS depressants are also known as sedatives and tranquilizers. They tend to slow down normal brain functioning and, because of this property, they have been found to effectively treat anxiety, acute stress, panic attacks, and sleep disorders.

The medical use of stimulants has shifted over the years. In times past, stimulants were used to treat asthma, obesity, neurological disorders, and so forth. Once the addictive nature of stimulants became apparent, their use was significantly curtailed. Now stimulants are primarily used only for treating ADHD, narcolepsy, and depression that has not responded to more typical antidepressant treatments.

It is important to remember that when these medications are used as prescribed, very few individuals develop addictions.
