Reading the Signs and Symptoms
Many signs and symptoms of addiction are common to all substances of abuse. The following are signs and symptoms specific to alcohol addiction:
Slurred or agitated speech
Physical indications of malnutrition, such as weight loss, poor skin tone, hair loss, and so forth
More frequent infections and illnesses
Alcohol odors on breath or clothing
Hidden stashes of alcohol, or alcohol disappearing
Reports of being found intoxicated at work or school
Social circle reduced to only those who also drink alcohol
Alcohol used to relieve anxiety, stress, or sleep problems
Lying or use of denial to disguise the true amount of alcohol consumed
Use of alcohol in situations where it is dangerous to do so, such as driving, operating machinery, babysitting small children, or other situations where alertness is necessary
It may be necessary to consult a professional who specializes in assessment of addictions to sort out the many signs and symptoms that may be present. Because alcohol affects every system in the body as well as behaviors and ways of thinking, assessment of alcohol addiction can be complicated and feel overwhelming. It may even be helpful to have more than one opinion and get different perspectives from objective professionals who are knowledgeable in working with those addicted to alcohol.
